Bike Porn 2

It’s not that often lately that you see a fixie with box-section wheels that looks so damn stylish. And that’s a shame. While deep-section rims just look plain ‘ol bad-ass, there’s an art to classicism. Whoever put this one together got all the pieces right. The San Marco saddle has a subtle print on it, I dig the smallish chainring, and the ITM quill stem (into a Time carbon fork) is decidedly old-school without going too far. And the radial lacing up front is a nod to modern, if deviant, wheelbuilding practices. I’m totally digging the full-drop ergo road bars (and hoods), especially given that this is a traditional road frame, with derailleur-ready dropouts and shifter bosses. Nice work. Apologies for the blurry picture, but I didn’t want to be “that guy” holding up foot traffic. A couple things here: large-diameter aluminum frames look better on larger frame sizes, and this is a monster of a bike. And I’m feeling the modern/classic component mix, from the San Marco saddle to deep-section rims. Dare I say…dope fenders? Outside Equinox, NYC.

The Bike

Me on my Langster

Last night I worked on my bike leg. 27 miles in about an hour and a half. Works out to an average of 18 mph. I tried to run afterward. No dice. Only got a mile away from the house before I had to turn around. Will have to work on that.

The pic is from a year ago. It’s me on the bike I’ll be racing with. It looks a little small for me, but feels good. It’s fast. It’s a 2005 (2006?) Specialized Langster, with a 48×18. Unless it’s ungodly windy on race day, I should be able to spin it pretty good. And I love nothing more than to take down dudes on multi-thousand-dollar, high-zoot bikes.

Updated workout regime (sic) here.

Me. Triathlon. 3 weeks.

Lake Geneva Triathlon, Here I come.

I’ve been wanting to do a triathlon for a while now, and I’ve just signed up for the Sprint Distance at the Lake Geneva Triathlon on September 6.

It’ll be a .33 mile swim (500-ish meters), a 17 mile bike, and a 5k run. Mixed metrics are fun. In any case, I hope to get through the swim in like 8 minutes, be right around 50 minutes for the bike, and then hit an easy 20 minute 5k, which should be rather painful considering the lead-up.

I swam for the first time in a long time (since high school) yesterday and did a half-mile in a half-hour with lots and lots of breaks. So I’ll need to get considerably faster over the next three weeks if I want to be competitive.

Regarding the bike leg, I’ll be riding my single speed, which is currently a fixed-gear (as of this weekend… I’ll be switching back to a freewheel before the race). I may be regarded as a bit of a nut by all my competitors, who will undoubtedly be decked-out in aero tri gear, carbon-framed bikes with gears aplenty, skinsuits, and the like. Did a slow ride on Saturday, and did a quicker one on the lakefront on Sunday after my swim. If you’re training for anything cycling-related, consider a fixie. The burn of using your legs to slow down is unique.

I plan on another half-mile in the pool tonight, followed by a 6-mile run. I’ll have over 24 hours recovery, which was always the magic number in college.

Stay tuned, if you care, for updates.
