Redesigning Foursquare’s User Pages

Click the image to enlarge!
Redesigning things is fun. I’m no designer, but I thought it might be nice to try my hand at redesigning the Foursquare user page, particularly with regard to how one friend views another friend on the site. Based on some things that I know are possible from a programming standpoint, I’ve also suggested […]

Old People, Lifecasting, and the Future of The Internet

Writing a review of Zazie’s breakfast. 4 stars!
Imagine a system that immediately captures every bit of information about a trip, and stores it permanently in an accessible, portable format—and on top of that, has been designed to fit your routine, not the other way around.
My parents created that system in the early ’80s, and they did it […]

Data Overload – Economist

The Economist this week is very choice. If you have the means, I suggest you pick it up. There’s a whole special report on data, why they’re interesting, and how much we’re creating. (I remade these two charts to make them prettier for the internets. Feel free to steal/share.)

Fascinating:

Wal-Mart processes 1M transactions every hour, feeding databases […]

Age of Slang, Idea and Design

A couple years ago, my friend Don and I had an idea while spending way too long debating the origin of a piece of slang.
The idea:
A crowd-sourced slang dictionary that would let you browse your way back through the history of language’s oddities, define terms, and otherwise waste away a workday. Think Urban Dictionary, but for […]

Nike Most Valuable Puppets Santa/Reindeer Ads

This aired yesterday during (and before) the big Lakers-Cavs Kobe-LeBrawn showdown.
It was preceded by this: Episode 4 in the Most Valuable Puppets (MVPs) series for this season.

So much right about these.
The puppets, which proved to be popular, if ill-fated during last year’s NBA Playoffs—LeBron didn’t make it to the Finals—the lyrics, the length, the cultural references that help […]

On Digital Nation-States

It strikes me that, more and more, our digital lives are mirroring our real lives in ever more peculiar ways. From reflecting our everyday behaviors to forming new ones, the circles between “digital” and “real” are less a thoroughly overlapping Venn diagram and more a shared area. Which I hope for all of you is […]

The Experimentation Imperative

The Experimentation Imperative
View more documents from Clay Jones.

Here’s the deck I presented this weekend at the Planningness Conference. In a nutshell:

The “place” where we all work is extraordinarily complex, difficult to understand and control
I think, at least, we can look to the weather modification field for some signals as to what we should be looking at
We need to […]

The Experimentation Imperative, v1

I’m talking this week at the Planningness Conference in San Francisco. I’m talking about the experimentation imperative within digital marketing agencies.

I’m talking about how traditional advertising got to be good, and how we can all work to improve digital marketing/advertising/whatever.

I’m also going to talk about two really interesting tropical storms.

You’ll have to wait until later to see more […]

Icebergs

It strikes me that many brand sites are a bit like icebergs: cold, dark, sometimes beautiful, and disconnected from the rest of the world.
Which is sad.
The gorgeous photo above is from David Burdeny, which I found on FFFFOUND. The type is Blackmoor LET, and I added the thing that came first to mind when I saw these images.
